The rare-earth elements, also called the rare-earth metals or rare-earth oxides, are a set of 17 nearly indistinguishable lustrous silvery-white soft heavy metals. Rare earth elements (REEs) are paramount for carbon-neutral/green and a large variety of hightech technologies; hence they are in high demand. As a result, supply of REEs is likely to be disrupted in the near future.
The 17 REEs are divided into heavy and light REEs. Other critical elements besides REEs, identified by the United States of America and European Commission, are also becoming less easily available.
